100 Miles

When you went to the grocery store the last time did you pay any attention to where your food came from?  I never did.  I didn’t care.  I wanted what was on my list and had probably been on my mother’s list and her mother’s list before that.  We learn what to eat from our parents and how to make.  If you have children check with them, you may see the trend repeating again.

Here is what caught my attention and changed my shopping pattern…The 100 Mile Challenge.  James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith are the authors of the bestseller “The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating”.  Their goal with this book was to effect change in our eating habits by making us “locavores”.  Simply stated, eating things found within your 100 mile circle.

The original challenge occurred in Mission, BC and was chosen due to its great local resources.  But, this got me thinking why we don’t do this everywhere.  It supports our local economies; It’s usually a healthier product because they don’t have to put chemicals in it to ship it across the country; and you can get it at a lower price because there is not shipping, handling and import fees to worry about.

So here is what I did.  I took out a map, put a dot on my house and figured out my 100 mile circle.  I was amazed to find what was actually in my circle.   There are farmers, ranchers, bottlers and many other people producing local products.  There was very little that I could not find locally.  There were also many resources to help me find local product.

If you are up for the challenge, then just put your dot and figure out your circle. Surf the web and make a few phone calls.  Be sure you check out the web site for “The 100-Mile Diet”. You might just be surprised.

Tell us what you find!  We would love to know.
